Happy Birthday SLCPK!

Written by Manic Velocity, August 31st, 2007

SLCPK began as an experiment on August 31st, 2004.  The experiment was to see if a parkour community could develop and grow in our beloved state of Utah.  A very rudimentary website was put together, a few photos were posted, and an extremely amateur video was made.

After a few short months, a discovery was made: A parkour community already existed in Utah.  People all over the state have been practicing and training for years!  SLCPK was simply a means to an end.  To bring everyone together.

The first few jams were pretty low-key.  Just ask Oni, or any of the other forum mods for that matter.  I remember how exciting it was when more than five people showed up to a jam.  Nowadays, just reading the “Event Planning” thread, it’s amazing to see upwards of fifteen people making preparations for a jam.  Phone numbers are being exchanged, car pools are being put together, and new locations are constantly being scouted.

Truth be told, SLCPK was never expected to grow as far and fast as it has.  For three years we’ve had a steady run of jams and gym sessions, new people have come and gone, some veterans have moved on to other projects, and we’ve been featured on the most watched news station in the state!

Plans are in the works to help our community continue to flourish for many more years.  In fact, I’m finding that I can no longer handle the task of “Webmaster” on my own.  I’ll be contacting a few of you in the coming days to ask for your assistance, so keep an eye on your private messages.

Finally, I want to thank all of you for making SLCPK what it is.  You guys have put the time and effort into making this a place where traceurs of all ages and skill levels can come and feel welcome.  A real community.

Happy three year anniversary, guys and gals.  Here’s to many more!
